Therapy for Trauma

Trauma isn’t defined only by what happened, but by how your body and mind had to respond to survive. When something overwhelms your capacity to cope—whether it’s a single event or years of subtle, chronic stress—your nervous system can remain in a state of protection long after the threat has passed. You may feel anxious, numb, disconnected, reactive, or chronically unsafe, even in moments of calm.

Trauma can take many forms. It might stem from experiences like emotional neglect, physical or sexual abuse, a chaotic childhood environment, a sudden loss, an accident, medical trauma, relational betrayal, or ongoing exposure to instability or fear. For some, trauma symptoms meet the criteria for PTSD. For many others, trauma shows up more quietly—as anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, shame, dissociation, perfectionism, or chronic self-criticism.

Avoidance is one of trauma’s most common coping strategies. It can look like overworking, emotional numbing, people-pleasing, or detachment. Avoidance protects us from unbearable pain—but what we push down doesn’t disappear. Over time, it shows up in the body, in our relationships, and in the ways we feel (or can’t feel) ourselves.

In therapy, we move gently toward what’s been held inside—never forcing, always guided by your readiness and sense of safety. We’ll work to help your nervous system find balance, to process what once felt impossible to feel, and to reclaim a sense of power and connection. My approach integrates somatic therapy, trauma-informed CBT, and psychodynamic exploration to support healing on multiple levels:

• Understanding how trauma reshaped your brain and body’s responses.

• Reconnecting with disowned parts of self with compassion rather than shame.

• Building grounding tools for moments of overwhelm or dissociation.

• Identifying relational patterns rooted in survival strategies.

• Integrating your experiences into a coherent, empowering life narrative.

Healing from trauma isn’t about erasing the past—it’s about restoring your sense of safety, trust, and choice in the present. You can learn to live in your body again, to feel connected, and to move through life without being ruled by what happened before.
